Building analytical capability: developing new approaches to assessing analytical maturity at organisational level

The Health Foundation has recognised the importance of improving analytical capability to address key deficiencies in the current health and care workforce. This programme is an integral part of the Health Foundation’s work on data analytics and incorporates elements that address the needs to support analytical development and the adoption of new methods and approaches. To date, it has supported various events and projects including supporting analytical networks and a number of specific projects aimed at improving local capability.

As well as the supply of analysts with the right skills, it has also identified that there is an important issue around the demand for good analytics amongst senior managers. Its review in 2016 identified that one of the ways to improve demand would be for organisations to assess their own analytical capability – as first step to prioritising change. However, there is not an established way that senior managers within heath care organisations can easily assess their own capability. The Health Foundation is therefore interested to see if a simple assessment tool can be developed to assess analytical maturity at an organisational level.

The Health Foundation commissioned Beautiful Information in December 2018 to research, develop and test such an analytical maturity tool. The tool will be developed for NHS providers and commissioning organisations. In order to do this successfully, we need to look at what are the best variables that should be measured to assess analytical capability. To enable us to do this, we would be delighted for you to be involved and participate in the project and, in particular, in the initial core research part of the project. We will be hosting three regional workshops (three in London and one in Manchester). If you would like to participate in this exciting project, I would be grateful if you could complete the following short online survey no later than Thursday 21 March 2019: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/8B2NRX7

Equally, please do feel free to share this with any of your colleagues or contacts who may also be interested in participating in this project.

We will be in touch with you shortly by email to confirm the details of the workshop session you will be attending.  In the meantime, please hold these dates in your diary. If you have any questions, please contact Ross Facer, Head of Business Support, by email at ross@beautifulinformation.org

Thank you for your help and support. I’m looking forward to working with you.

Best Wishes
